WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS AND WHAT DO THEY DO? The human body is a walking ecosystem: There are ten times more microbial cells living on the surfaces of our bodies — both inner and outer — than there are human cells.(1) Also known as 'friendly' bacteria, the probiotics that live in our digestive tract protect us from harmful bacteria. In addition, they help with digestion; make vitamins (B and K) and short chain fatty acids; stimulate the protective 'mucin' secretion in the gut lining; and break down cholesterol and toxins in our bowel.
